Welty went yard twice and drove in a career-high eight runs as Double-A Bowie routed Harrisburg, 17-2.
Drafted by the Orioles in the 20th round of the 2008 Draft, Welty's solo homer in the third inning gave the Baysox a 2-1 lead. Two innings later, the 24-year-old outfielder hit a bases-clearing triple and followed that up with a three-run homer in the sixth. Welty added a sacrifice fly in the seventh, capping the club's season-high output for runs by a single hitter.
"The last couple of days, I've had a couple of bad days," Welty said. "I've been swinging it pretty good all season but my timing was starting too late. Me and the hitting coach, Denny Hocking, went into the cage and worked on it. I felt relaxed and hit the ball and everything went good."
Welty had driven in five runs in a game, most recently on April 20 for Class A Advanced Frederick. The Washington native had hit two homers in a game twice before, but not since April 13, 2010 while with the Keys.
"I'm ecstatic," Welty said. "It was just a career night all-around, hopefully I have a few more of those in my future."
Over four levels this season, Welty is batting .348 with 10 homers and 48 RBIs in 47 games.
The Baysox scored in five of the eight innings in which they batted and put up multiple runs in four of them. Their 19 hits and 17 runs represented season highs as well, and Welty took pleasure in the team's performance with the bats.
"Everyone was feeling good, everyone was swinging well, everyone was hitting the ball hard and finding holes," he said. "That's the best part of baseball. When everyone is on, you can't be beat."
Ty Kelly had three hits, three runs scored and fell a homer shy of the cycle while Robbie Widlansky was 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
Anthony Rendon, the Nationals' top prospect doubled and scored in the loss for the Senators.
